If you think that teaching is all about giving boring lectures, then think again! Managing students, making convincing arguments, and adapting to other’s needs are all duties of a teacher. Aren’t these very similar to what entrepreneurs do? Well if you haven’t thought about that angle – think again! To celebrate the spirit of Teacher’s Day, here’s presenting a few teachers who have become successful entrepreneurs.
1) Jack Ma : Founder of Alibaba
Jack Ma was a school teacher in China. In 1995, he visited U.S.A. and saw the potential for Chinese translators (because of the large population) out there. His first company was China Pages, a directory of Chinese companies that searched for customers abroad. When that failed, he launched an eCommerce company called Alibaba in 1999. Today, it is worth $380 billion, making him one of the richest people in the world!
2) J.K. Rowling : Author of Harry Potter series
When you think about a popular book series, the first name to your mind will probably be “Harry Potter”. It is the best-selling book series in history! Its author, J.K.Rowling started her career as a teacher. She went through various struggles before the first book came out in 1997. After that, there was no looking back. Thanks to film deals, book sales and royalties, Ms. Rowling has a net worth of $650 Million. This self-made millionaire also runs a charity called the Lumos foundation.
3) Byju Raveendran : Founder of Byju’s
Byju’s is an interactive educational app, which has over (reportedly) over 15 million subscribers. Mr. Byju Raveendran, its founder, was working in UK. During a vacation in 2007, a few of his friends asked him for help in CAT preparations. A handful of students grew to 1000’s over the years and that is when he decided to start Byju’s (in 2011). The app has gained a lot of praise for how it makes learning more enjoyable thanks to its features.
4) Sanjit Roy : Founder of Barefoot College
Sanjit Roy is one of the earliest individuals to think about making rural India self-sufficient. He was named one of the “100 most influential people in the world” by Time Magazine in 2010! This is a journey which started back in the 1960’s. Even though he came from a very rich family, his heart was set on helping the poor. Going against his family’s wishes, he started the Barefoot College in 1972. It is now an institution that is an inspiration for pioneering rural development and has helped many men and women.
5) Steve Wozniak : Co-Founder of Apple Inc.
Today, Steve Jobs is known as the face of Apple. But in fact, the core idea behind the first Apple I computer belonged to Steve Wozniak. They started Apple in 1977 & thanks to iPods, iPads, iPhones, Mac laptops & desktops it has become another name for technology. In the mid 90’s Mr.Wozniak would teach computers to middle school students while going through a personal crisis. It helped him regain perspective and turn his life around!
